The Roman Catholic Church from Oradea Citadel
Image

As part of the Royal Palace located on the premises of Oradea Citadel, this provincial baroque church dates from 1775, according to the research and the existing documents. One of the first changes suffered by the initial exterior regards both the allure of the tower that guards the portico towards the court of the royal palace as to the access door to the church’s narthex. The devastating fire from 1836 has reached the church as well. As a consequence, the roof of the tower, which was initially baroque, became a simple pyramid after the reconstruction, covered first in tiles and now in tin.

A small but interesting detail, not yet fully exploited, is that in the church’s roof truss there is a segmental arch, Oriental style, positioned on the edge of the construction. After the first researches, as sensational as it may seem, it appears that the present church was built on the site of a minaret dating from the 92 years of Turkish occupation (1660 – 1692).

The “Saint Mary’s Dormition” Orthodox Cathedral

The edifice, most commonly known by the locals as “Biserica cu Luna” – “The Church with the Moon”, is one of the emblematic buildings of the town. Petru Petrovici, the bishop of Arad, set the headstone in 1784 and the constructions were completed in 1790, following the plans of the architect Éder Jakab. The church was hollowed in 1832, after the interior decorations were finished.

The church escaped the great fire in 1836 and so it has still preserved its original shape representing a valuable and interesting joining of the Byzantine and Occidental Baroque art. In 1920, after the Orthodox Bishopric in Oradea was founded, the church was raised to the rank of a cathedral. It possesses a series of unique decorative elements such as: the only portrait of Horia that is considered to be authentic, or a mechanism made by Georg Ruppe in 1793 and set in the tower of the cathedral, representing a globe painted half in black and half in yellow, which shows the phases of the moon.
